OLG Lice Policy:
With the prevalence of Lice in the Edina community, the health office would like to remind our community of OLG’s Lice policy:
When the health office is notified about a case of lice, we communicate with teachers to send an anonymous “lice notification” out to their homeroom classrooms. Similar to other communicable illnesses, the notification includes the homeroom affected, resources for treatment, and a fact sheet from the MDH. If lice is found in 7th or 8th grade, notification will be sent out to the whole grade.
To help the health office keep up with lice exposures, when lice is found at home, PLEASE NOTIFY THE HEALTH OFFICE.
As a reminder, all communication and notifications from the health office to teachers and other parents will always remain ANONYMOUS in compliance with HIPPA. We also understand the social stigmatization that can occur with lice, and respect the importance of our students' privacy.
If lice is found at school, the health office will call the affected student parents directly and will discuss next steps. OLG does not enforce an exclusion policy for Lice, however, we do encourage treatment as soon as possible.
If a student is showing signs of lice (ie: itchy head, noticeable nits or louse in hair) we will always screen a student and notify parents if lice is found. We will not conduct random lice checks, but if a classroom has multiple cases of lice, we will work closely with the teacher to observe for symptoms and check heads as needed. Parents may always request a lice check.
